Old Rivals Trophy 2008

This year we held the competition at Shandon Park Golf Club on what was almost a perfect day for playing golf and on what proved to be an almost perfect course. The only disappointment was the poor turnout of Instonians, we knew it was going to be difficult to retain the trophy when we realised before the Tee Off that the Methody Old Boys had nearly twice the number of players. However as the competition is calculated on the best 8 cards total Stapleford Points there was all to play for.
Undaunted we set about the task manfully and tackled the job that looked like it couldn’t be done and sure enough it couldn’t !!! Despite several excellent scores we were unable to match the performances by the ‘Old Rivals’ and were well beaten on the day.
At the presentation of the trophy it was great to see that our opponents had lost none of their generosity of spirit in the way they lavished us with sympathy.

The Quin Cup

It is traditional that we play for this cup at the first outing of the year, it was presented in 1927 for ‘A competition amongst Old Instonians’ and few golf societies can boast of such a fine trophy. Although we did not have the turnout we would have wished there were several excellent scores by individuals and it is a while since it has been won with over 40 points.
This years winner was Willie Oakes with 41 points closely followed by David Johnston, 3rd was Willie Hogg and 4th Trevor McNeilly.
It was a pleasure to welcome Trevor McNeilly home on a visit from Delaware U.S.A. where he has been living for some 40 years, proof if it were needed of our global appeal.

Can you help?

Two of the Society's trophies are missing. Both are silver cups. The first is engraved AUTUMN TROPHY and was presented on President's Day 2003.
The second is that presented to the Best Veteran.
