2007 Reports

W.W.L. Taylor Cup

Our annual match against The School was held on the 21st June, 2007 at Dunmurry Golf Club. The School has won this Cup so many times that Instonians have forgotten what it looked like. However, on this occasion a strong team consisting of; Eric McCloy, Alan Dunlop, Derek Weir, Stanley Walker, David Johnston, Willy Sampson, Ken Young, Allan Sweeney, Willie Oakes and Brian Martin were fielded and a hint of good fortune rather than skill won the Trophy. Instonians 3 matches, the School 2 matches.

The Golf Society welcomed the Principal, Miss Jane Williamson, to the outing and she gracefully presented the Trophy to the non-playing Captain, Colin D Gowdy. He regaled those present with stories of W.W.L. Taylor and the immense contributions that “Tosh” (as he is affectionately known to all Instonians) made to the Instonian family and the School. He also thanked Derek Weir for his help over the years, as master in charge of school golf, in organizing the school teams, and wished him a long & enjoyable retirement.

Captain’s Day - Colin Gowdy

June did not flame as is normally expected for the golfing brethren but, despite this, Captain’s Day on 29th June enjoyed some very good weather.

The event was held at Malone Golf Club where the course was in pristine condition. On that occasion the Gross Cup won at the Ulster’s Public Schools Golfing Society event at Portrush was presented to the Captain. The ‘13 Captain’s Cup’ and Captain’s prize were won by Dr Andrew Dick with (42 points) on his own course. The runner-up was Mark Lindsay (36 points) and third place went to Dave Johnston (Lisburn 36 points).

It was a pleasure that the Golfing Society were able to take part in the 75th Anniversary festivities of the Cricket Section. The Cricket Section organised an outing at Shandon Park Golf Club and a team comprising the Captain, Colin Gowdy, Alan Dunlop, Allan Sweeney and Willie Oakes turned out to give support to the occasion. Suffice to say that the team enjoyed the occasion more than their golf.

Two of the Society's trophies are missing. Both are silver cups. The first is engraved AUTUMN TROPHY and was presented on President's Day 2003.
The second is that presented to the Best Veteran.

If you have either, or know who has, please contact Alan Dunlop at the number above.
