Tuesday 22nd February 2005
This weekend is a massive one for both the club and school teams alike.
Instonians still believe that a top three premier league place can still be
achieved despite a defeat by Annadale last Sat. They have four games to play
and by winning them all they can finish ahead of Banbridge. It is a tall order
but with a team working for each other then it can still be done.
Sat 26 Feb 1.00pm at the Dub Upper Malone Instonians play Dublin YMCA in the
quarter final of the Irish Senior Cup this is a must win game for Instonians
and as current holders of the Senior Cup the squad will be up for this one.
Also next Sat morning in the quarter final of the Ulster Bank Burney Cup RBAI
will play old rivals Methodist College. So a big day for both the School and
the Old Boys.
We wish them both well and look forward to both games being well supported.

Irish Senior Cup Quarter Final Draw
Instonians will face a home draw against Dublin YMCA on Saturday 26th February
2005.

Other results around the club from this weekends matches.
The 2nd XI played on Friday night against a very strong Lisnagarvey 2nd XI, in
the teeming rain, which never-the-less saw some fine hockey played by both
sides. At half time Inst trailed by the odd goal, but poor defending at short
corners and having to chase the game in the second half allowed 'Garvey to
score several easy goals and they eventually ran out 6-2 winners. Gregg
Frizelle getting the 2 Inst goals (one from open play!).
The 3rd XI played North Down on Saturday and after a steady start ran out easy
winners by scoring 8! Davy Wilson, Mark Lee and Paul Dickson all contributing
2 goals each.

Anderson Cup report from The Ireland Saturday Night
Raphoe :1 Instonians :7
INSTONIANS made Lifford a happy hunting ground for the second time in three
weeks today when they again beat Raphoe.
Following their Irish Senior Cup success they had a more comfortable passage
today in the Powerade Anderson Cup when they ham-mered seven goals past the
Donegal men. Youngster Richard Lee was their hero with a first senior
hat-trick while other Inst goals came from experienced skipper Neil Cooke (2),
Clarke Kennedy and Mark Irwin.
Inst only led 2-1 at half time with William Wanchope replying for the home
team.
However, in the second half there was only one team in it as Inst scored at
will to ensure their participation in next Sunday's semi finals at Banbridge.

Anderson Cup report from The Ireland Saturday Night
Instonians :3 Cookstown :2
CLARKE Kennedy doesn't often score goals but the experienced midfielder
certainly pulled Instonians out of a hole today (writes Graham Hamilton).
The Belfast lads needed a win to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the
Powerade Cup semi-finals but were trailing 2-1 going into the final ten
minutes.
Nothing seemed to be going right at this stage for them as Cookstown easily
contained their shot shy attack, but when captain Neil Cooke blasted in a
penalty corner variation in the 62nd minute to level affairs, Inst suddenly
burst into life again.
And it was Kennedy who provided the last-gasp winner, forcing the ball home
from close range after another Cooke penalty corner had been blocked by
Cookstown goalkeeper Ian Hughes.
It was hard on Cookstown to have victory snatched from them, but on the
balance of play Inst just about deserved their win.
Neither team were at full strength, due to Irish international commitments and
injury, but it was Inst who started the better and took a fifth minute lead
when schoolboy Michael Watt swept the ball home after a flowing move up the
right.
But seven minutes from the break Cookstown levelled when Ian Campbell tucked
home the re-bound from a penalty corner.
And then the Tyrone lads took the lead two minutes into the second period when
Godrey Irwin hammered in their second penalty corner.
With Inst not firing on all cylinders, it looked like Cookstown would hold out
but the Belfast lads just don't know when to give up and Cooke's sizzler and
Kennedy's late winner means a victory at Raphoe next week will give them their
semi-final slot.

the break 2-0 in the lead. Queens came back strongly in the second half and
pulled one back. Exciting end to end hockey followed but Inst managed to hang
on until the end.
The 4th XI completed a great victory of rivals Down 2nd XI. The 4th XI mix of
youth and experience held off a pleasent Down team to win 3-1.
