President's Message

I am delighted to have been elected as President of Instonians for the 2018/19 year. I am very aware that I follow in the footsteps of a remarkable succession of Presidents and pay tribute to them for their individual contributions in developing the reputation of the club. My hope is that I can, in some small way, continue this fine tradition.

Instonians is a broad church in terms of our membership and the variety of sports and activities with which we are associated. While my background with Instonians is primarily Rugby related, having represented the club on the playing side for 15 years between 1981 and 1996, I also played cricket on the mid-week XI and the 5th’s – some say I was better suited to a 6th’s or 7th’s had we fielded such teams. While I did not play Hockey for the club, I take great pride in being part of the vote to amalgamate the Hockey Club back into the Instonians family in 1988.

While Instonians have always celebrated the past, we also look to the future, and in that regard the incredible work carried out by officials and volunteers in the Cricket, Hockey and Rugby mini and youth sections is to be commended. The time and effort put into encouraging active participation in our sports, in an atmosphere of competitive fun, while making room for all abilities to children from all backgrounds, is extraordinary.

One particular highlight for me this year will be the Rugby Club’s Centenary celebrations, the club having been founded in Thompson’s restaurant on 23rd May 1919. There will be many opportunities through the year to celebrate the Centenary, and more information will become available about these events, however one date for your dairy is 17th May 2019 when an Instonians Rugby Gala Ball will be held in Belfast City Hall, which for one night only, will be floodlit in Purple, Yellow, and Black.

My personal hope is that as we move forward we further develop our focus upon active family their sport, and across the whole club. I also hope, given Instonians rich tradition nationally and internationally, that our friendships with other clubs can be deepened and new friendships developed.
