6th XI play their first match

Sunday, 15th May 2016 saw the debut of the club’s second “lads and dads” team, Instonians 6th XI.

It was unclear whether it would be an exercise in poaching 5th XI players however that fear was soon dispelled as a new team took to the field, with only two occasional (and apparently expendable) 5ths from last season.

The team consisted of five adults who had a combined age well north of 200, whilst the youth section of seven boys (including 12th man) were all under 13.

The opposition, Newforge II were a very good outfit bringing back many experienced players from last year’s league winning BICS – so as openers go it was as tough as it gets.

Electing to field first the boys put in a great shift. There were the welcome stats of “Bowled Peake, caught Peake; bowled Carson, caught Carson” and the boys worked tirelessly on a full size field. Every boy bowled two overs and Matthew Peake’s 2 for 16 caught the eye, with Paddy Carson (1/16) and Jamie Beattie (1/18) making impressive debuts.

Newforge were wobbling with six wickets down on the 70’s but some fine lower order batting saw them to 184 in 25 overs.

Experience was sent in to give chase, and 81 from N Carson was a joy to watch. The quick fire 20 from James Lambert shows why he is such a prospect, and Myles Lowe chipped in with a debut 11. D Glasgow rolled back the years with 20 however it was not quite enough and 152 saw us fall short by 32 runs.

It was a performance that will win many a game this season if repeated.
