2nd XV win under lights at CIYMS 2nd XV

Instonians 2nd XV 29 – CIYMS 2nd XV 7

Instonians 2nd XV turned their focus back to the league after an excellent cup win at home to Ballymena 3rd XV the previous Saturday.

Injury and sickness provided opportunities for a number of players promoted from the 3rds and returning from injury, but a game against CIYMS 2nd XV under the Friday Night Lights provided Inst with an opportunity to get their league performances back on track.

Inst started strongly, with forwards carrying well and the scrums and lineouts solid. Inst stuck to their patterns, with consistent pressure leading to a break out wide, Blair Robinson took the ball in full flight, bounced one player before drawing the last defender and setting up Daryll Hand for a score in the corner. Try! Conversion by Andrew Keane. 7-0 Inst.

It wasn’t long very Inst scored again. CIYMS were building some momentum, with clever kicking from Tim Murphy putting Inst under pressure. However, a loose pass from a CI back was cleverly intercepted by Cameron Williams inside his own half and he sprinted in for the score unchallenged. Try! Conversion by Andrew Keane. 14-0 Inst.

Inst were beginning to dominate the close game, mauls were working well and the pack was carrying well, Matthew Nelson, Jonny Mooney, Robert McGibbon and Chris Duggan all contributing. Shortly after another loose pass from CI was intercepted by McGibbon inside his own half, and he sprinted the full distance for another score. That much pace for a 2nd row should not be allowed! Try! Conversion by Andrew Keane. 21-0 Inst.

Inst were looking for the bonus point in the first half, but lapses in defence allowed CI to cross under the posts. First up tackles allowed CI to get on the score sheet. 21-7 Inst.

Ross O’Donnell was marshalling the team well, keeping the tempo up, clever kicking by TJ Morris allowed Inst to play a territory game as the half wound down. Shortly before the half Blair Robinson had an excellent steal from a CI lineout, Ross O’Donnell made an excellent break and quick hands by the backs put Andrew Keane over for a score in the corner and sealed the bonus point for Inst. Try! 26-7 Inst.

The second half didn’t provide any more points for either side, but there was plenty of attacking play and solid defences. It was a tightly contested game throughout. Matthew “Dash” Nelson made an excellent break from a ruck, flying like the wind, thinking he was in for the try, only to be called back for crossing…the greatest try he never scored. The game was played in good spirit and Inst should be happy with their performance, especially, following a run of losses. The bench of Rab, Fanjo and Ash provided able support in the second half. The set piece was very good and the backs played a solid game.

Final Score 26-7. A good result for the 2s, getting back on track. Every player contributed and did his job. Standout performances include Matthew Nelson, Jonny Mooney, Robert McGibbon, Blair Robinson, Chris Duggan, Ross O’Donnell, Andrew Keane and Cameron Williams. It was a good team effort. A bit of a break for a few weeks now before welcoming Banbridge 3s to Shaws Bridge after Christmas.
