3rd XV have great win at Carrickfergus 3rd XV

Instonians 3XV win 36-10 at Carrickfergus 3XV 24 March 2018

A brief match report this week as our team journalist was called into action early in the game.

Due to the recent inclement weather conditions, Instonians 3XV ventured north of the city to the coastal resort of Carrickfergus to contest what was to be only their 3rd league match of the 2018 against Carrick 3XV.

With all three Instonians teams engaged in important league fixtures on Saturday, this weekend was always going to be a test of the club’s playing resources. However, with a huge amount of work undertaken behind the scenes right up until kick off, a capable squad was assembled for what was expected to be a tough encounter.

With conditions spring like, Instonians kicked off playing with the slope on what was an extremely heavy pitch. Taking control early in the game Instonians scored two try’s in the opening minutes. A well organised lineout and a solid scrum provided the platform for the talented backline to create havoc amongst the Carrick defence. Intent on playing an expansive game, confidence grew with forwards and backs combining well to create and score a further 3 try’s, leaving Instonians well in control as the first half came to an end.

The second half of this match became slightly disjointed as substitutions, injuries and the introduction of uncontested scrums began to impact both squads. Carrick to their credit did not give up, and continued to play their rugby and were rewarded with two unconverted try’s late in the game. Instonians also continued to play and expansive game and created, and scored a further 3 try’s before the final whistle was blown, with the final score 38-10 to Instonians.

To their credit the team recognised after the final whistle that this was not our best performance of the season, however; lack of match practice and the integration of a number of new players, and players playing out of position, was always going to have an impact. As has been the case throughout this season the squad have pulled together played for each other and on Saturday, a bonus point win was delivered.

Like ourselves Carrick also had three teams playing league matches on Saturday and were under similar pressure to gather together a squad, so thank you to the Carrick 3’s, who endeavoured to play a similar brand of rugby as ourselves, and for playing the match in good spirits throughout.

A special thanks to the referee, if we don’t have referees we don’t have matches. Due to injuries and substitutions and at time indiscipline from both teams, this was a difficult match to referee, however our referee on Saturday managed the control the game and allowed both teams to play what was overall a decent game of rugby.

Thank you again to the people who helped to put our squad together for Saturday, you know who you are.
