Under 13’s progress to cup semi

The 13’s produced a quality performance to beat CSNI by 28 runs at a sun-kissed Stormont on Monday 25th June.

Having won the toss, opening pair Rory Ellerby and George Palmer started confidently, scoring at over a run-a-ball from the start against a defensive field setting. Just when Rory was getting into his stride, he fell to a well-taken catch at deep mid-wicket. Unfortunately Amy Hunter didn’t trouble the scorers and with 2 quick wickets, CSNI had their tails up. Fortunately Tom Crothers and George had other ideas. The pair combined defensive and attacking strokes with some great running between the wickets to continue the scoring momentum. George fell to a simple caught and bowled chance, having done the hard work. Another excellent knock. Meanwhile, Tom started to open his shoulders in the closing overs with some strong straight hitting. Although a couple of partners came and went in the run chase, he found an able partner in Luke Beattie who batted well to rotate the strike. Tom finished unbeaten.

In reply, the opening attack of Rory and George put pressure on CSNI straight away with some tight bowling and an opening spell of 6 overs yielding only 25 runs for CSNI. Tom’s introduction put further pressure on the openers until when he bowled Mohammed with an off-cutter. Unusually, CSNI chose to hold back Ryan Hunter, choosing instead to promote Adam Leckey to 3. He struggled to beat the field, however Harry Dyer at the other end was looking very dangerous. With 10 overs gone, CSNI were 55 for 1. With the required run rate at 9’s, Harry Dyer started to back himself to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Spin duet of Michael Hollway and Conor Anderson showed great discipline with Conor claiming Harry’s wicket to put Inst firmly in the driving seat. Not to be outdone, Michael Hollway clean bowled Ryan Hunter as scoreboard pressure mounted. The remaining batsmen had an impossible task against some excellent bowling as Rory and Tom came on to finish their spells.

A super all-round performance from Inst, with an immaculate fielding display.

Thanks to CSNI for a competitive match and to Ian Houston for umpiring.
