3rd XV lose at Dungannon 4th XV in Forster Cup Rd 1

Saturday was a tough day for the 3rd XV who made the journey to play Dungannon 4th XV in the first round of the Forster Cup.

With all three senior teams playing on Saturday this weekend was always going to be a test of the clubs playing resources, however; as has been the case for each match this season the squad rallied, and a full complement of players made the journey to fulfil the fixture.

With a number of players making their first appearance of the season, and the majority of the backline playing out of position, this fixture was always going to be a challenge, especially against an experienced, skilful and physically superior Dungannon squad.

The conditions on Saturday did not lend themselves to attractive open running rugby, however; the real difference between the two teams was Dungannon’s physical advantage across their squad, which starved Instonians of any meaningful possession, or territorial advantage. Despite the brave efforts from the 3’s squad, who kept going and managed to score the last try of the match, Dungannon eventually ran out convincing winners, and we wish them well in the next round of the cup.

To the referee, this was a difficult match to manage given the conditions, the physical imbalance between the two squads, and the very obvious risk to player welfare, however; Saturday’s Ref managed to control the game, and applied a refreshing level of common sense, to help reduce the risk of serious injury while also allowing the game to flow.

On the plus side the 3’s now enter the Forster Plate competition, where they have tasted success in recent years.
