1st XI Hit Form

26th May 2019

After a slow start to the season the 1st XI moved up a few gears with two wins in two days.

On Friday they defeated Muckamore by 9 wickets in a T20 Cup Group B match, and followed that with a resounding victory over Cork County in the Irish Senior Cup.

Muckamore batted first in the T20 match putting up a total of 142-7wks, having been restricted by Andrew White's spell of 4-19. A fine 74no from Shane Getkate added to 45 from Oliver Metcalfe saw Instonians through to a 9 wicket victory, though with only four balls to spare.

Saturday's Irish Senior Cup match was slightly delayed due to rain, and Cork County batted first, passing the hundred mark for the loss of only one wicket. However, Instonians fought back well, bowling them out for 233 in 42.5 overs.Shane Getkate was the best of the bowlers taking 4-44, and Andrew White backed him up with 2-41.

The D/L system set a revised target of 235 in 44 overs for the openers to chase. A remarkable unbeaten partnership between Nikolai Smith and Oliver Metcalfe saw Instonians cruise to a 10 wicket victory in 34.3 overs. Both batsmen scored centuries, Smith with 106no and Metcalfe with 123no, replicating two other performances, those of Rory McCann (143) and John Stevenson (117no) in a partnership of 244 v Ballymena in the Premier League in 2009, and DJ Jacobs (123no) and John Stevenson again (106) in a partnership of 246 v luckless Ballymena in the Premier League in 2010.

Saturday's effort was Instonians' sixth double-century stand and was the third highest. Let's hope this will give the season some momentum.

The only other team playing on Saturday was the 3rd XI who kept their 100% record, co-incidentally by a margin of 10 wickets as well.
