Under 13s Crowned All Ireland Champions

A large crowd on a glorious Bank Holiday Sunday at Shaw’s Bridge watched Instonians retain their title in style.

Many parents had helped and planned brilliantly to ensure the ground and facilities looked fantastic as we welcomed Coleraine, the north west champions.

Coleraine called correctly and chose to have a bowl. An unfortunate run out at the non-strikers end meant a trudge back to the bunker for Michael Hollway. George Palmer and Tom Crothers formed an excellent partnership with George racing to his 50 in the 9th over. George eventually fell for 72, bringing an end to a 113 run partnership. His departure brought Ben McCausland to the wicket. He batted cleverly to rotate the strike and find gaps while Tom accelerated with some clean hitting. The pair added 67 to bring the total to 197. An imposing total.

In truth, the Coleraine reply was choked from the outset. Max and Daniel applied the initial pressure which resulted in a run out courtesy of a Tom throw. Daniel took a return catch and when Tom’s first delivery hit middle stump, Coleraine were reeling. Michael Hollway’s off-spin brought instant reward as he claimed a hat-trick aided by two Ben Oberholzer stumpings. As bowling duties were spread across nine bowlers, Lorcan Donnelly claimed a brace while George and Frank Hollway took a wicket each with Coleraine slumping to 25 all out.

Thanks to Coleraine for the game, to Alex Adams and Ian Houston the umpires for officiating and to our scorer Helen. The parents have provided brilliant support all season and put on a sumptuous spread for our visitors.

And so begins the preparation for next year’s defence….
