3rd XV win v Ards 2nd XV

On Saturday, Instonians’s 3rds hosted Ards 2nds in a top of the table clash at Shawsbridge, with onlooking 3rdXV alumni at the pre match lunch, the thought of a double rickety and with last weeks ‘best performance in 5years’ words of our leader Gavin Oakes, still playing in our heads, the stage was set for a top performance.

The game started off with a bit of a stalemate, some strong carrying from a talented Ards pack, tested the Stones defence.

Fortunately Instonians came up trump. Some outstanding hits and reads in defence by Joe fryers helped the team.

With this and some scramble defence, Instonians started to gain the upper hand resulting in Finlay putting us 3-0 up with a penalty.

Continued pressure and controlling of the game by fly half Ashley black helped the 3rds to go over in the corner with the first of a brace by Lewis Bodel.

The game was slightly tarnished by Injuries to a few players including Louis meant a reshuffle in the pack, this brought on Ethan ‘limpet’ white who was outstanding from minute one in the breakdowns achieving almost double figures in turnovers.

This confidence gave a way for players to show some fine counteracting skills, resulting in tries for Nathan Cole in his first start back after a hiatus to play cricket.

Another for Lewis Bodel, one for Ben Charmers and Rab Brown who showed his running skills in open play throughout the game to add to his at times scarily violent play.

One special mention must go to Henry’dementor’ Pattison who puts in tackling performances that he has no right to do with his size. Just need to hope that Mr Pattison can feed him up whilst still living at home.

From minute one this was probably our best team performance of the season and certainly is going to put us in fine stead for our upcoming games.

All the players deserve a pat on the back and earned their beers on Saturday night.

One overriding difference in our team this season is our fitness, the fact that we scored 30 odd points in the second half against Bangor and 35-0 unanswered points against Ards is something that we can thank Curtis Barret for.

Let’s keep this going for the rest of the season.
