Instonians 1st XV win 41-12 at home to Dromore 1st XV

Instonians keep the pressure on league leaders Clogher Valley with a bonus point win at home to Dromore.

Matches against Dromore have always been close, with Instonians in recent seasons coming out second best.

It has been a difficult season so far for Dromore which has led to a change to the coaching set up in recent weeks. Teams under a new coach are always a tricky affair so Instonians were right to be wary,

The strong wind blew towards the posts at the large car park end, it was therefore always going to be a game of two halves.

Instonians played with the wind in the first half. with good game management scored 6 tries to Dromore’s none.

First try came from the dominant Instonians scrum which turned over a Dromore scrum, no 8 Ali Burke touching down, Matthew Keane converted. 7-0

Second try came from a scrum penalty, kick to corner, lineout, maul and no 6 Ryan Hanson crashes over. 12-0

Another solid scrum led to good phases of play with winger Zak Davidson diving over. 17-0

Same again, bonus point try, but this time the other winger Andrew Keane forced himself over at the corner. 22-0

From Dromore’s restart Instonians stole the ball at the ruck leading to a superb blindside break. Mark Mairs trick pass still has me confused, caught by Jay Reiback who popped it to Zak Davidson who finished it well. Matthew Keane converted. 29-0

The next phase of play probably broke Dromore’s hearts, great play from Dromore exposed some poor Instonian defence but just as the Dromore player crossed the line under the Instonians posts the ball was knocked from his possession. Instonians counterattacked from behind their line, Ali Burke to David Scott and finished off well by centre Bevan Prinsloo. Matthew Keane converted. 36-0

Halftime 36-0

The second half was a much closer affair, Dromore lifted their game, used the strong wind well and Instonians performance dropped a bit from that shown in the first half.

When Instonians missed a kick to touch, Dromore ran it back well, poor D allowed a score under the posts. 36-7

Instonians worked hard into the strong wind but every time the ball was lost clever Dromore kicking had Instonians back in their own half.

Eventually Instonians worked their way back up the field, from a scrum under the Dromore posts the ball was moved wide for winger Zak Davidson to show good feet to complete his hatrick. 41-7

Dromore to their credit never gave up, eventually a clever lineout move led to a prop crashing over for a try. 41-12

Soon after the whistle blew.

Final Score 41-12

Thanks very much to the ref for controlling the game well in difficult conditions. He must have annoyed someone at the Ulster Branch as he has been asked to referee us 3 times this season, poor fella!

Thanks to Dromore for the manner in which the match was played, hard but fair.

We wish them well in the next round of the All Ireland Junior Cup.

Also it was great to see a large number of Dromore and Instonians at the pre-match lunch and at the sideline during the match. Always welcome.
