1st XV have bonus point win 29-18 at home to Grosvenor 1st XV.

On Saturday the 1st XV had another tough encounter with Grosvenor 1st XV in the league.

Like the first game of the season both sides entertained the crowd and Instonians left with a bonus point win. However Grosvenor were unlucky not to get anything from the match.

Throughout the game the Instonians set piece had the edge, but in open play both defences did well and it took several phases from both teams to get across the line.

From the kick off Mark Mairs fielded a great catch and started Instonians first attack. Several phases

led to an Instonians penalty, kick to corner, maul, more phases and centre Bevan Prinsloo crashes over at the posts. Matthew Keane converts.

Instonians 7 Grosvenor 0

From the restart some poor Instonians kicking and offloads gave Grosvenor an attacking lineout. From their strong maul they moved the ball and tested the Instonians defence. Scramble D held them up over the line but Grosvenor slotted an earlier awarded penalty.

Instonians 7 Grosvenor 3

Grosvenor were now definitely in the game and the next scoring chance went to them but there kick through went dead.

The game was entertaining with poor kicking being punished and both side running the ball well. The next try was Instonians with some wonderful hands moving the ball from our 22 and eventually allowing Mark Mairs to score in the corner, one definitely for the highlights video. Conversion missed.

Instonians 12 Grosvenor 3

Again Grosvenor attacked and got play into the Instonians 22, this time an Instonians steal at the breakdown and clearing kick saved any score.

From a lineout on our 22 Instonians the pack mauled the ball into the Grosvenor half, then more great hands and off loads led to Onisi Burekarma running in at the posts. Converted by Matthew Keane.

Instonians 19 Grosvenor 3

Grosvenor did not give up, clever kicking got play into the Instonians 22, from a high tackle a penalty was awarded. Kick to corner, maul and a Grosvenor player dived over in the corner. Converted.

Instonians 19 Grosvenor 10.

As halftime approached more Instonians good hands led to a scrum on the Grosvenor line, however the ref awarded a penalty at the scrum to Grosvenor and the halftime whistle blew.

Halftime - Instonians 19 Grosvenor 10

First half got underway with Instonians on top. Some infringements at the rucks and set pieces kept Grosvenor in the game.

Eventually the Instonians dominance won a penalty at the scrum. Kick to the Grosvenor 22, at the maul Grosvenor decided not to compete so Mark Mairs simply turned around and ran past the fullback to score his 2nd try and Instonians bonus point. Conversion missed.

Instonians 24 Grosvenor 10

Grosvenor came right back at Instonians but butchered two changes on the left wing when the final pass let them down.

The game really opened up now with both sides attacking from everywhere but the last pass letting them down.

Eventually one such attack from Grosvenor ended with them diving over on the left wing, conversion missed.

Instonians 24 Grosvenor 15

End to end stuff as teams tired and space opened up, a couple of Bevan Prinsloo breaks came to nothing when Instonians were penalised at the breakdown.

From a Grosvenor attack Instonians were penalised for high tackle and the kick was slotted.

Game definitely still on.

Instonians 24 Grosvenor 18

From the restart Grosvenor attacked and the Instonians scramble defence hung on. Outhalf Ruari O’Farrell managed to get a boot to a bouncing ball and play moved to the Grosvenor 22. Pressure on Grosvenor led to a penalty to Instonians, kick to corner, maul and Neill Saulters touches down. Conversion missed.

Instonians 29 Grosvenor 18

Both teams kept the running rugby to the end and only the final pass prevented Instonians scoring their 6th try.

It was fitting finish when another penalty was won at a breakdown, this time by Instonians player/coach Paul Pritchard. Kicked out and whistle blew

Final score
