Ballyclare 1st XV are already in the final of the All Ireland Junior Cup where they face Clogher Valley 1st XV, match to be played on Saturday 29th January. Therefore Instonians were under no illusion of the task they would face and so it proved to be.

From the kick off it was clear that it was going to be a physical encounter. Both sides moved the ball well and tested each other’s defence.

The Instonians set piece started well. Solid at the scrum and gaining much ground from the driving maul.

The first try came from David Scott, bobbling to hold a pass, which distracted the defence and allowed an offload to centre partner Bevan Prinsloo who ran half the pitch to score under the posts. Converted by outhalf Richard McCarthy

Ballyclare came back immediately with a try of their own. The Instonians backline defence was breached and when the ball was recycled and moved to the left wing, Ballyclare crossed untouched. Difficult conversion missed.

Instonians 7        Ballyclare 5

When Instonians lost the ball from their lineout Ballyclare moved the ball through their backs once more. Again a missed tackle allowed the line to be broken and simple hands let the Ballyclare right winger to round the defence and score under the posts. Conversion made.

The halftime came when an Instonians attack was halted when Ballyclare won a penalty at the breakdown.

From the restart Instonians counter attcaked and a Ballyclare high tackle; led to Instonians penalty. Kick to corner and an attacking maul made good ground. Ballyclare dived over and knocked on at the ruck, 5 yard scrum.

This was probably the first really dominant Instonians scrum and it was rewarded when no 8 Ali Burke touched the ball down over the line. Converted by Richard McCarthy

Instonians 21     Ballyclare 12

Ballyclare regrouped and good play brought play into the Instonians half. After several phases the ball was moved wide for Ballyclare to crash over. Another difficult conversion missed.

Game definitely still on.

Instonians 21     Ballyclare 17

In this end to end game it was Instonians turn to attack. A great 50/22 kick from winger Andrew Keane gave Instonians an attacking lineout in the Ballyclare 22. Lineout won and mauled. This time Instonians moved the ball through several phases and it was the Ballyclare’s backline turn to be breached by centre Bevan Prinsloo as he crashed through to score at the posts. Instonians 28     Ballyclare 17

For the last 10 minutes Ballyclare threw everything at Instonians but with some heroic defending the Instonians line was not crossed.

A relieved Instonians team and crowd cheered when the final whistle blew.

Final Score

Instonians 28     Ballyclare 17

The large New Year’s Eve crowd was properly entertained.

Thanks to Ballyclare for the spirit in which the match was played and we wish them good luck in the All Ireland Junior Cup against Clogher Valley, should be a cracker!!

Thanks to the ref for the way he controlled the game.

But our massive thanks goes to the Instonians Coaches and Instonians team, for their efforts over Christmas in preparation for this match and for their gutsy performance that held off a strong Ballyclare side. Same opposition again in the league in two weeks time, at Ballyclare!!
