U14s Last week U14 won 45 -12 at home to Bangor This week we host Donaghadee at Shaws Bridge at 11am The writer decided to pop down to Shaws bridge to see at first hand this U14s squad. A squad made up from players with little or no rugby background. From various schools from all over Belfast. All thanks to the Instonians outreach programme, driven by Michael Fairbanks. Some players had only played a handful of matches. What did I see? I saw around 22/25 boys of various sizes, the tallest being over 6 foot – I was told his dad was 6 foot 8 inches!! I saw a squad of young men under the guidance of 4 positive coaches, an enthusiastic manager and cheered on by supportive family & friends. I watched a group of young men who had clearly been well coached: there was already structure to their play, great tackling, strong at the breakdown, good hands and an entertaining brand of 15 man rugby being played. The subs were fully used and no matter what 15 were on the park, the style and standard remained the same. One of the coaches was having his first go at Associate Ref and was extremely fair and excellent – well done James. I had to keep reminding myself that these boys were all new to rugby. They were a credit to their coaches, their parents, themselves and of course INSTONIANS – Rickety. I will be back and can recommend to you all to do the same. Well done to all involved. . VOLUNTEER MARSHALS NEEDED FOR RUN IN THE DARK – 9th NOV Hi Every year in November in cities across the world, the ever popular ‘Run in the Dark’ event takes place. Started by proud Instonian Mark Pollock, the purpose is to raise money to help fund research into a cure for paralysis resulting from spinal injury. The Belfast event takes place next Wed 9th Nov between 18.30 and 22.00 at Stormont but is currently short of crucial volunteers to help marshal the course. The organisers need at least 10 more volunteers and I thought who better than the Instonians family to help out. If you are available, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and mark the email BELFAST along with your name and mobile number. For the avoidance of doubt, this does not involve running but standing at points on the course and keeping runners safe! .
