Instonians 2nd XV exit Cup
Inst 2nd XV 6 Donaghadee 1st XV  50

Saturday 15th October 2011

Having picked up three league wins in a row and a confident win in the first round of the cup the 2s had the right to be confident coming out from the changing room. Several changes as always buts that the nature of the league and the need to support the senior squad and Johnny Craig and Duncan Chambers bravely stood up to fill vacancies despite the prospect of a tough game. As always Wilbur Leacock ran a super session to focus the squad and iron out any issues.

Shortly before kick off the rain started and stayed on for most of the match however handling was not to be badly affected. Donaghadee started strong and showed they had a well drilled team with a desire to win. Training was instantly showing its worth as the Instonian defence absorbed wave after wave of attack. Despite having a very inexperienced front row against a well known veteran front row of psuedo-instonians the pack held their ground well and line outs functioned well too. A superb back row meant that Chambers at 9 had time and space to give some very good delivery to the out half and at the twenty-minute mark the game was very much still competitive. Penalties were the story of the half and will probably be the story of training too. Thankfully they went both ways and so by the end of the half having conceded an easy try and a couple of well deserved ones we were still in the game thanks to a couple of decent penalties from Rory McCann.

Despite some excellent scrumaging from Richard Troupe and Jonathon Smith both had to retire through injury to leave the scrums uncontested for the last half an hour of the game. With the toll of battle starting to mount and all out in terms of the bench those still standing battled on and breaks were made and hard yards defended. Uncontested srcums may have helped but a sin bin and the loss of Stuart McAllister to injury left just 13 men defending the clubs pride and the visitors took full advantage. Inevitably several tries were conceded but few players left the field without having given it the full 80 mins and so heads have no need to be low. Final Score 50-6

Cup run over, long live the league.
