|2nd XV Have great win at home to Londonderry YM 52-5|
Inst 2nd XV 52 v Londonderry 1st XV 5
Saturday 5th November 2011
A beautiful sunny Autumnal day greeted those who travelled to Shaw’s Bridge and there were many. With the 1st XV playing at home at the same time there was a good buzz about the club and of course the usual awful traffic.
From the kick off the pack thundered into the opposition half and tackled hard from the outset. Rab Brown and Dave McGovern both led from the start with outstanding tackling and punching runs respectively. The early pressure continued and when the backs finally got a chance to run at the opposition, just 11 minutes in our first try was on the board scored by Matt Wright or chuckles to his team mates. This was to be a great day for Chuckles who just five minutes later scored again thanks to forward pressure and some excellent handling and running out wide. Both kicks were duly slotted by the Rick McCarthy on his captaincy debut for 2011.
Londonderry YM battled on but with such a strong Instonian pack they were unable to gain any ground but throwing everything at it. By the thirty minute mark the game was all but over, Epi Ratu had scored before Chuckles notched up his hatrick with the Captain slotting both and 28-0 looked quite impressive. Londonderry YM finally found a gear and ventured into the Instonian half. After a long period of pressure and energy sapping forward work the visitors got something out of it and scored their only points of the day. No shame on the hosts though the defence was excellent and showed a real team spirit amongst this very successful team. Almost on the stroke of half time some sublime supporting play saw Chuckles score a fourth and left the score at 33-5.
Half time was more about relaxing and joking for the team as the performance was all but perfect and the team were clearly enjoying their performance. Try of the day (and there were many contenders) came from an unexpected thirty metre solo effort from the hooker Dave McGovern who seemed to go through 4 players like a silky running back.
Man of the man match had to be Chuckles, having been subbed earlier in the match he was brought back on for the last ten mins and scored his fifth in short order. A cherry on the cake was there for Dave McGovern also, despite playing at flanker he scored his second which broke the back of the visitors and so the match was blown up early at 52-5, best result and performance of the season and the best way to open up the Conference League account.
The job of the 2s was almost done, the 1st XV were battling hard but not quite there. When the mighty 2s entered the changing room for their post match celebration the joy in the changing room seemed to affect the guys still on the pitch and the last ten mins saw the senior squad seal a vital win and the clubhouse duly erupted.
