Captain Brian Lowry
Royal Portrush – Rathmore Course 21st June
Thanks to Brian we were able to play on and have the use of his home course facilities on the last day before it was closed to societies, in preparation for the Irish Open, to be played there at the end of June.
We got off to a prompt start on what was a wonderful day for golf, sunshine, a light breeze and the course, as usual, in wonderful condition combined to provide an excellent day of golf for all concerned.
To add to the golf a bit of celebrity spotting was the order of the day, Darren Clarke seen blasting drives off the practice ground and a close encounter with Peter Allis who spent some time chatting to the last fourball, wishing them well as they set off to the 1st tee.
We were royally entertained by our captain Brian who took the opportunity to show us the new trophy he has provided in memory of an Instonian hero of his youth.
‘John ( Jake ) Gordon’
It was agreed that this would be presented initially to the ‘Player of the Year’ with the intention to make it a trophy for younger members, provided we can encourage more to turn out regularly.
This years’ winner of the ‘Captains Prize’ and ‘The Thirteen Captains Cup’ was
Mark Lindsay 38 points
2nd Roy Latimer 37 points
3rd Maurice Markey 36 points
