U18’s Match Report
15/3/2008
U-18 v Ards U-18
Lost 43-5.
In their first game of the cup due to Newry
pulling out in the previous round, the U18s
came up against a well drilled Ards side with
a big pack of forwards. Conditions were windy
and muddy and suited the Ards pack and from
the start they dominated the set pieces, winning
several turnovers in the rucks and lineouts.
With the strong wind behind them in the 1st
half they scored 3 unanswered tries, before
Inst pulled one back through Matthew Jeffers.
At half time we were still in the game and
started well with the wind in the 2nd half,
good kicking by Peter Shiels had us camped
in the Ards 22, but not having played together
for a while showed and Ards made Inst pay
for any mistakes they made, scoring several
breakaway tries.
Much credit must go to the U18s side, even
when the score tallied up they never gave
up and fought until the final whistle. They
defended valiantly all game, with big hits
coming in from Nicholas Andress and Rory Bayliss,
amongst others. All 15 guys put it a massive
effort, with no subs several players had to
fight on through injury but they all stuck
at it. Well done.
Instonians
U18 Vs Cooke U18
Instonians
U18’s gave an impressive display in
this match with rivals Cooke, and the result
never looked in doubt as we ran out winners
34-12.
Unorganised
preparation for the game resulted in scrums
being uncontested but the pack pulled together
immediately from the kick off and the first
try was not long in coming. After a break
from the back of the scrum by Stephen Moffitt
(who was to cause havoc for the Cooke defence
all day) was stopped short of the line, second
phase power saw Rory Bayliss drive over from
10 meters for a well deserved first try.
The
teams exchanged further tries, with the backs,
Michael Frazer, Ashley Moses and Ben Farmer
getting in on the action and Moffitt was accurate
with his kicking. Cooke scored a somewhat
controversial try where there seemed to be
several players holding the ball up.
The
score at half time was 24-12.
The
second half saw Instonians increase their
dominance with Rory Bayliss again using his
power to drive over the line from short range.
Moffitt rounded of the scoring with another
incisive break from the back of the scrum
leaving the final score 34-12.
Next
week the Under 18’s host Enniskillen
and hope to build on this week’s good
result.
