This Saturday the 2s welcomed fellow AIL 2s Bangor to Shaw’s Bridge for an early 1300 kick-off. . A strong side welcomed back 2s Captain Rhys Davidson from 1s duty and also saw back row Robert Whitten continue his rehab, with Richard McCarthy having his first runout for the 2s this season playing 10 in an exciting backline. . The 2s had been challenged to be more clinical than last weeks demolition of Portadown and to keep Bangor from crossing our try line and attacked these challenges with venom. The Inst pack set the tone early with powerful carries from ÂÂÂÂÂ props Ryan Hanson and Matty Nelson and crunching tackles from Chris Beaumont and Rhys Davidson the pressure from our set piece soon saw scrum half Marco Manso dart through a gap and score the first try (converted by RMcC). . A second try followed shortly after with Rob Whitten crossing for his first try of his comeback before winger Michael Melville got on the score sheet. (Both converted by RMcC). . 21-0 soon became 28-0 as Rhys Davidson crossed for the easiest try you’ll ever see an 8 score off the back of a scrum that would have had the DOR smiling from ear to ear (converted by RMcC). . HT – Instonians 2s 28- 0 Bangor 2s . The second half started with a bang, the restart was swallowed up by replacement flanker Onisi Burekama who powered through the Bangor defenders finally being brought down just inside the Bangor half and releasing a devastating attack from the Inst backs with young Speedster winger Teao Carolan flying down the wing before chipping through and gassing the fullback to finish a sweeping half pitch move (33-0). This became the pattern for the second half, restart returned with interest then a sweeping backs move exploiting the space left as Bangor defenders struggled to control hard running forwards led trys for no12 Sam Fryers (converted by RMcC), another for Teao Catolan (converted by RMcC). . A couple of penalties for Bangor gave Rob Whitten the chance to continue to steal everyone of their second half lineouts launching counter attacks that saw Frazer Laughlin (13) and center Rory Glasgow cross wide. . With the Bangor team now chasing shadows the pack went in for the kill. Ryan “Rhino” Hanson skittled defenders en route to his try (converted by RMcC) before Chris Beaumont (6’7” Second row) finished a sweeping move from the forwards, galloping in from 50+ meters to the delight of the coaching staff and fans, Seeing a big second row in full flight is one of the most amazing sights in sport. . FT 69-0 . The 2s coaches were delighted to see the team execute the game plan so effectively and to take pretty much every opportunity they had to score. 69 points in 60 mins of rugby shows how ruthless this excellent side were on Saturday. What is truly impressive is that we kept Bangor to nil and limited them to a few trips to our 22. . Also worth noting was the excellent officiating of Referee Graham Gibson who was exceptional in his control and communication throughout the game . An outstanding start to a great Saturday. |
