2nd XI v Glenanne 2nd XI

On Sunday at Shawsbridge the 2nds qualified for the final of the Irish Junior Cup when they defeated Glennanne 2nds following shoot out shuttles by 7–6 Johnny Burden and Matty McCord had given us an early lead in the first 10 minutes which we held until half time.  Glennane came out very strong in the second half and with 3 minutes to go we were 3–2 down when a Matty McCord cross found John Watson who made it 3–3, so to the shuttles.

The score at full time was 3–3 but we won the shuttles 4–3 to go through to the final in Dublin to play against Three Rock Rovers.

This is the first time we have reached the final since 1981. The long wait is over. We won the IJC in 1978 when we defeated Cork C of Ire, in 1980 when we defeated Cookstown, in 1981 we lost in the final to Belfast YMCA. Whilst it was a great team performance expertly managed by Tim Hogg and Andrew Rose the star of the show was Schoolboy goalkeeper Finlay Marney who had an outstanding game. Each side takes 5 shuttles and if still level it then goes to sudden death. It was 3–3 going into the 5th shuttle Glennane couldn’t beat Marney so it was up to Stuart McNeice to see if he could put us in the final. Stuart scored and so the celebrations started with Finlay Marney being surrounded by his jubilant team mates. This was a great performance as Instonians had 5 schoolboys in their victorious squad.  What a day, what a match and what a result.  We are rightly proud of what they have achieved.
